If a student does not meet the prerequisite for this course, he or she may be dropped from the course at any time during the term. Students are introduced to psychology as a science: the study of behavior and mental processes. Topics surveyed include methodology, biological psychology, learning, memory, psychological disorders, psychotherapy, and social psychology. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: (a) describe the field of psychology (e.g., define "psychology," list the major subfields, discuss what psychologist do and the kinds of information they consider to be important, describe the methods of study utilized by psychologists), (b) define or describe basic concepts and principles of psychology, (c) apply the information provided in this course to real-life situations. Required Materials: Wade, Carole, & Tavris, Carol (2008). Invitation to Psychology, MyPsychLab Edition, 4th edition. Pearson Education, inc., Upper Saddle River, NJ. NOTE: Other Psy1105 sections at CNM (include some taught by this instructor) use different textbooks. Make sure you purchase the correct textbook for this course. NOTE: Mypsychlab is an optional learning tool available to students who purchased a new textbook, and for students who purchased a used textbook and purchase access to the lab from the publisher. Mypsychlab provides many study tools that students find helpful in learning the course material. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the materials in the lab. The access code for mypsychlab is provided with all new editions of the text. If you purchase a used copy of the text, you must purchase access to MyPsychLab separately from the publisher. The materials in Mypsychlab will NOT be graded as part of the course. They are provided for learning opportunity. Use of mypsychlab is NOT mandatory. Do not buy anything else for the course; all other materials are available online. Technical Requirements: This is a psychology course taught in a distance learning format.
